AHPRA uses a Streamed Pathway to assess internationally qualified nurses:
✅ Stream A
You are in Stream A if your qualifications are substantially equivalent to Australian standards.
👉 You do not need to take the OBA or OSCE.
You only need to complete Orientation Part 1 and 2, and then proceed with registration.
✅ Stream B
You are in Stream B if your qualifications are not substantially equivalent.
👉 You must complete the OBA, which includes:
⦁ NCLEX-RN (knowledge-based exam)
⦁ OSCE (clinical skills exam)
After passing both, and completing Orientation, you can apply for registration.
OSCE stands for Objective Structured Clinical Examination.
It’s a practical exam where you demonstrate clinical skills in simulated scenarios (e.g., taking vital signs, giving medication, wound care).
You must take the OSCE if:
⦁ You’re an IQNM (Internationally Qualified Nurse or Midwife).
⦁ You’re on Stream B of the AHPRA assessment pathway.
⦁ You’ve completed the NMBA's Orientation Part 1 and 2, and the Outcome-Based Assessment (OBA) NCLEX-RN.
The OSCE is currently only held at the Adelaide Health Simulation Centre, South Australia and RAZCOG, Melbourne
There are 10 stations.
Each station lasts 10 minutes and tests different skills like communication, assessment, clinical procedures, and safety.
⦁ Communication with patients and team
⦁ Infection prevention and control
⦁ Medication administration
⦁ Vital signs and clinical observations
⦁ Wound care and mobility
⦁ Professional documentation
⦁ Clinical decision-making
You must:
⦁ Meet the minimum standard in each domain.
⦁ Pass a set number of stations overall.
⦁ Demonstrate safe, competent, and ethical practice.
We offer:
⦁ Structured preparation in 3 tiers (handbook, video library, simulation practice)
⦁ Qualified RN educators
⦁ Practice with real scenarios and feedback
⦁ A supportive learning community
As of now, the OSCE fee is AUD $4,000 (subject to change).
You’ll pay this directly to AHPRA when booking the exam.
We recommend:
⦁ Practising real-life clinical scenarios
⦁ Attending simulation sessions
⦁ Reviewing NMBA codes and guidelines
⦁ Using checklists and self-assessment tools
⦁ Joining an OSCE preparation course like ours
Yes, you can resit the OSCE.
You’ll be given a report outlining areas for improvement and can rebook the exam after a short waiting period.
